Sure it’s great to give money to the government once a year to ensure we’re all doing our part, but it never feels like philanthropy, does it?
Well, we have decided to offer a little pick-me-up today. Mention this blog post and receive 15% off your food bill and sapporo on tap for $2.50.
Hopefully that will help take the edge off.
(Not valid during Happy Hour, but hey, you’re already happy then)

For all of those sake fanatics out there, Japan is bringing back a great salty carafe that doubles as a unique snack. These “Ika Tokkuri” sake bottles are 100% edible, and if you’re familiar with sushi lingo, you may guess they’re made from sun-dried squid! Not only are these unique, all-natural treats, but they also help to enhance the flavor of the sake. Once partially dried these squid are stuffed and hand-molded to create their organic shape. We hope to check one out as soon as they’re release in the states!.

Warning! Following in this man’s footsteps could cause extremely high sodium intake! There has been a man tasting and reviewing bowls of instant ramen since 1997, 4,308 bowls to be exact. His reviews can be found on his Japanese website, but we’ll take his word for it. Now we just need him to visit Boom so see how we compare! (via Gizmodo & Boing Boing)

Are you a tea lover? If so, come on in to our Capitol Hill location this Thursday from 1:00 - 3:00 for a special tea tasting event. Yui Yoshinga from the Tagashira Tea Company will be discussing all things Japanese tea.
Tagashira Tea Company, a family owned business, was established in 1930 and Yui, is in the third generation. She took over the business from her father with a big passion for Japanese tea. It took her many years to perfect all the intricacies of tea. Now, not only does she respect the tradition of Japanese tea but also pursues and celebrates new flavors.
She is also working on developing the real taste of Japanese tea in a tea-bag for someone who is busy but a real gourmet.
Should be fun! Se you there!

Our Haiti Relief art exhibit had such a positive response we have decided to really commit to bringing in new artwork on a regular basis and this Wednesday we are thrilled to present the artwork of Thea Wolfe. Take a look at Thea’s website and you will see why we are appropriately geeked-up at the opportunity to show a few of her gems.
Thea Wolfe? She’s the one with the cheap gems glued on her face. You might find her hibernating in her studio for months on end, or racking up another 60,000 miles on her truck in the name of rock. Or maybe she’s in Germany, having a midnight dance party around a late 80’s tape deck. Thea is one part road, one part rodeo. To see more, please visit www.theawolfe.com or pick up a copy of the book, Year of the Wrong, which will be available for viewing and ordering.

We had a really successful night and raised over $1,300 for Haiti relief. In fact, we had so much fun putting the show together that we have decided to begin regular art showings at boom on the Hill. It’s not that we don’t love our green walls, but it was refreshing to change things up for sure.
Special thanks again to Spike Mafford, Dean Zulich, Joe Shlichta our own Matt Larson, and the rest of the boom staff who worked the event. Here are few snaps of how the bar set-up for the event.

If you haven’t eaten a lot of soba noodles in your life today would be a good time to start the year off right. In Japan Soba is often enjoyed on New Year’s Eve as a symbol of longevity according to a recent article in the LA TImes. Check it out here.
Thanks to all of our Boom Supporters in 2009. We’re looking forward you to bringing you more good stuff to try in 2010!

Beautiful crop art has literally sprung up across rice fields across Japan. But, unfortunately for you sci-fi lovers, there is no alien involvement. These works of art have been carefully planted, using different colors of rice plants deliberately arranged and grown in paddy fields. As summer advances, the plants shoot up and the stunning images appear.
